Meet the Artist: Jeremy Welsh

  • Kunstgarasjen 15 Møllendalsveien Bergen, Vestland, 5009 Norway (map)

Jeremy Welsh says that "Collage in various formats has been an artistic method I have adopted ever since I started art school in England in 1972. Paper collage, photo montage, video art, digital images, performance art, sound art and installations have been the media I have worked within , and the procedure of cutting, gluing and assembling has been a common thread throughout my artistic career. Many of the processes we use today within digital media can be seen as extensions of collage techniques. Cut and paste in Word or Photoshop, for example, can be traced back both to visual artists such as Picasso, Braque, Schwitters, Ernst, and to the cut-up methods developed in the books of William Burroughs.”

6 Songs is also collage-based and exists both as digital graphic images and as 'visual scores'. The intention is that musicians will have the opportunity to interpret the collages on their own terms and create associated sound works.

Jeremy Welsh (born 1954 in Great Britain) is a visual artist educated at Trent Polytechnic School of Art & Design (Nottingham Trent University), Dept. Fine Art (1974 – 1977) and Goldsmiths College, University of London, Dept. Fine Art (1980 – 1982 ). Welsh has worked as MA coordinator at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bergen (2001-2013) and associate professor and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Trondheim (1990-2001 and 2014-2020). He has been active as an artist since 1977 and has participated in many exhibitions and festivals internationally. His work has been purchased by, among others, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Norwegian Cultural Council and Trondheim Art Museum. He has carried out several public art decorations. In recent years, he has often collaborated with contemporary musicians, composers and sound artists, including the sound artist Trond Lossius.
